florida, cnn is projecting that bill nelson has won. this is another disappointment for republicans. they were disappointed in the republican candidate, who just didn't perform very well against this incumbent democrat in a pretty competitive state. delaware, tom carper, one of the few remaining moderates in the senate, democrat, he is winning re-election, we project. maryland, cnn is projecting senator ben cardin is going to win. same goes for sheldon whitehouse, democratic senator from rhode island. cnn projecting he has won another term. still, the drama is in those competitive races. those too close to call. we will go back to the state of indiana. look at this. it is still pretty -- it was pretty close but look at this. joe donnelly, the democratic candidate, pulled ahead of richard mourdock. he is a republican candidate who made the big faux pas in talking about the fact he believes pregnancy as a result of rape is a gift from god. he plummeted in the polls. 29% reporting right now but so far, joe donnelly looks like he is ahead.

cnn's martin savidge joins us from cleveland. early voting, martin, very important for the president. how's it looking where you are in cleveland right now? >> reporter: well, at least the cnn poll of the early voters seem to be going very much in president obama's favor. let me point out something here. the early voting has finally come to an end in the state of ohio. the reason i say finally is it began october 2nd. it ended at 2:00 this afternoon. the complete tallies for the state are not up. but up until friday, 1.6 million early votes were cast. of that, 1.1 million were absentee ballots. in cuyahoga county, 282,589 votes were cast. here's the number that could end up haunting the state. 1.3 million absentee ballots were sent out. so far, 1.1 million have come back. 200,000 absentee ballots still out there somewhere. the worry is that many of those ballots could actually be people who show up to vote on election day. they can do that but they'll be given a provisional ballot. we already know there's a lot of legal wrangling

welcome back to cnn's special election coverage. we're coming to you live from washington, d.c., this morning, just one day to go until the polls open nationwide. the battle for the white house could not be any tighter than it s take a look at the numbers. a brand new cnn/orc voter of likely voters has mitt romney and president obama in a dead heat at 49% apiece. today both kanld dates acandida targeting the crucial swing states. the president and bruce springsteen will hold rallies in madison, wisconsin, columbus, ohio, and des moines, iowa. mitt romney has rallies in columbus, ohio and lynch bunch, virginia and manchester new hampshire. superstorm sandy has election officials scrambling to relocate the polling stations and also in some cases bring generators to other polling stations and it is not clear how much the storm aftermath is going to impact voter turnout on tuesday. meanwhile, the daily news and "newsday," two new york newspaper that's backed president obama in 2008 are now backing governor romney. had barack obama done

it was only after we called the state of ohio for president obama that -- at 11:18 last night cnn was able to call the entire election for president obama. joined now by carol costello who is live this morning in columbus, ohio. carol, let's get a little bit of a different feeling there this morning. >> oh, things are so much calmer now. but as you said, john, it was ohio, ohio, ohio yesterday. voters were excited to get to the polls. i spent most of my day yesterday in hamilton county in the southwestern portion of the state near cincinnati and voter turnout was extraordinarily high. i'm now in columbus, which is the center of the state, and i decided to get the newspapers for you because i'm an old-fashioned kind of gal and i thought you'd want to see the headlines. the first one says obama wins ohio. can you see that? and a second edition will come out later today, the best is yet to come. and this headline is really telling. because ohioans are really hoping the best is yet to come. mostly voters voted for obama because he supported the auto bailout. a lot of them kept their jobs
